A Study on the Pinghe River Water of Sui and Tang Dynasties and the Transportation of Military Supplies in the Northern Border Areas
The Pinghe River Water, excavated during the Kaihuang era in the reign of Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty,is a man-made waterway located in the northern border region of Shengzhou.During the Sui and Tang Dynasties,it served as a vital transport artery for linking granaries and facilitating the logistical supply of the border military forces. The specific function of the Pinghe River Water underwent periodic variations due to adjustments in the military defense configuration in the Hequ region and changes in the transportation routes for military logistical supply.During the Sui Dynasty, military depots were established on the right bank of the Yellow River, and the Pinghe River Water was responsible for transporting grain and forage from these depots to various garrisons and towns on the left bank.During the Tang Dynasty's Kaiyuan era,the Pinghe River Water in Shengzhou played a crucial role as an integral component of the military logistical supply chain in the Hequ region. It was responsible for transporting grain and forage, which had been previously transported by land from Hedong,to the intermediary granary on the right bank.Following the An Lushan Rebellion(安史之乱),due to adjustments in the supply transportation lines, the Pinghe River Water was abandoned and gradually fell into disuse, ultimately becoming silted and obsolete.
