A Study of Information Sources for the Topographic Maps of Shaanxi Province Produced and Printed by Japan During the Period of Republic of China
During the Republic of China period, there are nine sets of topographic maps of Shaanxi Province made and printed in Japan, totaling 458 pieces.Among them, three sets of reprinted maps and two sets of compiled maps are mainly based on copies or redrawings of the Republic of China government system 1∶100000 scale maps and 1∶50 000 scale maps. These maps include chronological elements from both China and Japan. The compiled maps, the 1∶100 000 scale topographic maps are reduced to the Republic of China government system 1∶50 000 scale maps in equal proportions, with each map contains two to four 1∶50 000 scale maps, providing greater convenience.Compared to the existing 1∶100 000 scale topographic maps reprinted by the Republic of China government system and reprints from Japan, this set of maps has richer topographic elements and higher accuracy. The other four sets of time information are all surveying and mapping maps of the Japanese chronology, with topographic elements derived from the aerial photography by the Japanese army, which has better accuracy and greater utilization value. This paper clarifies the information sources of the Japanese topographic map of Shaanxi Province, and provides a case reference for exploring the literature sources and data characteristics of modern military topographic maps.
