Two Studies on the History of the State of E in Western Zhou Dynasty
Examining the history of the State of E(鄂)in the Western Zhou Dynasty, the inscriptions on two vessels,Yi Zun(疑尊)and Yi You(疑卣),which read'To the Lord of E,to the city of Zhuo'("于卜噩(鄂)侯,于盩(盭)城"),indicates that the the early Western Zhou Dynasty located the State of E in the vicinity of Suizhou,called'盩'(i.e."盭""厉""赖").This is corroborated by archaeological findings of the early State of E in Suizhou, indicating that during the early to middle Western Zhou period,E was situated in the Suizhou region.Additionally, the account in the Annals of the Grand Historian of Chu Family in the late Western Zhou Dynasty of Chu Xiong Qu'乃兴兵伐庸、杨粤,至于鄂'can be interpreted as'乃兴兵伐庸、杨,粤(越)至于鄂',the course is from Yong(Hubei Zhushan)through Yang(Tang, northwest of Suizhou),and then to E(Suizhou),indicating the march route progressing eastward.
