Mobile Phone Built-in Camera Colorimetric Method to Monitor Indoor Formaldehyde
A simple indoor air pollution monitoring system is proposed by integrating a new formaldehyde colori-metric detector and a built-in camera function in mobile phones. The colorimetric detector uses a solid-phase col-orimetric reagent made of 4-amino-3-hydrazino-5-mercapto-1,2,4triazole,ZnO,KIO4,and agar, and changes the color from white to purple, red, green, and blue by exposure to formaldehyde gas.The concentration level of formaldehyde in the indoor environment is determined based on the degree of color changes. The quantitative lim-it of the detector after 24 hours of air exposure is 0.011 mg/m3,which meets the requirements of the formaldehyde detection method for indoor air quality formulated by the World Health Organization. This detector studies the changes in the obtained photo images by using various mobile phones and changing photography conditions, and calibrates the measured color intensity with color standards, thereby improving the stability of monitoring results.
