Application of Modified Thermo-responsive Hydrogels in Forward Osmosis
Thermo-responsive hydrogel(TRH)is a kind of polymer material which can respond to the external tem-perature stimuli.Due to its osmotic pressure and excellent dehydration properties,TRH can be applied in forward osmosis(FO)process as draw agent. However, the traditional TRH with poor swelling ability cannot generate high water flux during FO process. Therefore, the TRH should be modified to improve its swelling performance and ac-quire higher osmosis pressure,in order to have a better application prospect in FO process. In this work, several TRHs modified by inorganic or organic materials and their applications in FO were introduced.Studies have shown that the swelling properties of hydrogels can be effectively improved by adding hydrophilic substances(such as inorganic sludge ash, graphene oxide, etc.,organic substances such as sodium acrylate, polyethylene gly-col,etc.),thereby obtaining the results in the FO process. In addition, through adding carbon particles,γ-Fe2O3 and other materials, more water flux can increase the water resource recovery rate and reduce recycling energy consumption. Therefore, the modified thermosensitive hydrogel has broader application prospects in the FO process.
