The Examination Disturbance, the Loss and Recovery of Scholarly Title, the Boycott and Participation in the Civil Service Examination in the Late Qing Dynasty——A Case Study in Wenzhou Prefecture
In 1882,Yang Jingcheng and Huang Qingcheng, two linsheng in Pingyang county lost their scholarly title because of the disturbance they aroused in the county-level civil service examination in Wenzhou pre-fecture.To regain their scholarly title, they needed the cooperation between officials and gentry of different ranks, especially the private helps from the influential local gentry. In fact, the leaders of disturbances were not seriously punished by the law, which was indeed a result of the cooperation between officials and gentry, and thus also a reason for the increase of examination disturbances in the late Qing period.Schol-ars dared to protest at the cost of their honor and future for maintaining their cultural, economic and social privileges. But their protests did not mean they attempted to oppose the examination institution. It thus re-vealed the complexity of such disturbances as the civil service examination competed with modern schools.
