Discovering King of Kuala Lumpur:Historical Writings of Yap Ah Loy in Modem China
Yap Ah Loy was regarded as King of Kuala Lumpur.In the late 19th century,Yap Ah Loy's story had been noticed by the intelligentsia and was widely known via Liang Qichao's writing.During the 1911 Revolution,Yap Ah Loy was portrayed as a man who rebelled against the Qing.In the anti-Japanese war,his story was again employed to mobilize oversea Chinese to support the motherland.However,the Japanese invading force also used Yap's story for their own purposes.With the development of oversea Chinese stud-ies,professional historians clarified Yap's experience,and Yap was finally established as an oversea Chi-nese leader in Southeast Asia.The historical writings on Yap Ah Loy reveal the complex relation between knowledge production and social transformation.
