The Construction and Reproduction of Legitimacy:The Political Ideas in German Flag Flying Days
In 1949,after the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic were estab-lished,they both chose black-red-gold,the national flag of the Weimar Republic,as their national flags, declaring that they inherited the tradition of the 1848 Revolution and the republican spirit of the Weimar Republic, which claimed their legitimacy. Not until 1959 when the GDR added the national emblem to the flag were the two German flags distinguished.Although the two Germanys chose similar national flags, their flag flying day were quite different, which expressed different political ideologies and reflected the different sources of legitimacy. After the reunification,Germany revised its flag flying days, which clearly demon-strated its commitment to the European unity, the adherence to the democratic institution, and the thought-ful reflection on its history.
