The Characteristics and Circumstances of Contemporary Elderly Immigrants in the United States
For a long time, young and middle-aged people occupied the majority of immigrants in the United States. They played a vital role in the development of American urbanization, industrialization and subur-banization.In contrast, the number of elderly immigrations were limited and their influence was much less than the former. However, due to the adjustment of immigration policy and the aging of the population, the number and proportion of elderly immigrants after World War Ⅱ in the U.S.increased significantly. In ad-dition,their special status, immigrant and the elderly, make them worth paying attention to.The elderly immigrants show different characteristics in their ancestral home,English level, geographical distribution, living arrangement, economic status and health conditions. The duality of the identity of the elderly immi-grants has also brought many difficulties to this group, such as cultural discomfort, the loss of social roles, limited social participation, etc.,all of which highlight the special existence of this group in the contempo-rary American society. For this reason, they particularly deserve the attention of the U.S.government and non-governmental organizations.
