The Idea of"Early Modem"in the Periodization of World History
"Early Modern"was initially a concept of periodization dedicated to European historical research,aim-ing to break through the limitations of the traditional"medieval/modern"dichotomy in historical periodiza-tion.American historians have not only played a major role in the formation and dissemination of this term,but also strived to"localize"and"globalize"it so that it can be used to describe corresponding stages in the history of the"non-European"regions and countries,or contribute to the construction of an"early modern world".However,"early modern"involves theories of"modernity"and"modernization",which in-evitably leads to academic and ideological dispute,and thus its"legitimacy"and applicability have long been controversial.There are also quite complex situations in the understanding,translation,and application of the concept of"early modern"in Chinese historiography,and some related issues still need further ex-ploration.
