A Study on Neoliberalism and Egyptian Modernization
Egypt has gone through a tortuous process of passive, active, and then passive modernization for more than 200 years. The Nasser-style socialism, with industrialization, nationalization and"equalization of wealth"as its core, did not fundamentally solve the problem of Egypt's modernization path and was sub-verted by neoliberalism, leading to Egypt losing the hard-earned initiative in modernization.Sadat and Mubarak carried out neoliberal reforms in Egypt, resulting in Egypt's industrial regression instead of progress, and both the industrial structure and class structure suffering from polarization. The serious polar-ization and widespread poverty in society are not only fertile soil for political unrest, but also deepen the dual dependence on external resources and foreign markets in terms of capital accumulation and market de-mand.Egypt still needs to actively explore a modernization path that is consistent with its national condi-tions and public opinion.
