Jiang Yizhi and The United Library——A Discussion on the Survival and Development of Libraries under Internal and External Forces
As a model of modern private libraries,Shanghai Private United Library adhered to the principle of"working together to make things easier, each contributing what they have collected, preserving the national heritage, and maintaining the national spirit".It constantly strengthened the connection and interaction be-tween various forces inside and outside the library and created a miracle in the history of Chinese libraries from"no people,no things"to"collecting about 240,000 volumes of historical reference books and more than 10,000 kinds of bronze and stone rubbings".This paper takes Jiang Yizhi as an example, who was first to respond to Ye Jingkui's call to build a private United Library and later became"the greatest spon-sor".Based on various related new documents discovered in recent years, this paper attempts to clarify the historical facts and contributions of Jiang Yizhi's book and money donation, and discusses the important influence of internal and external efforts on the survival and development of the United Library.
