The Establishment and Wartime Medical Relief Work of Wuhan Sanitarium(1937-1945)
In 1937,the Wuhan Sanatorium was established in the outskirts of Wuchang by the American Sev-enth-day Adventist Church, funded by donations collected from its medical treatments for Chinese celebri-ties.Following the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War in 1937,the Wuhan Sanatorium opened before its completion and joined the International Red Cross Society for Central China. It made every effort to treat injured soldiers and civilians through supplies from Shanghai and Hong Kong. After the fall of Wuhan,for-eign missionaries used their neutral status to shelter and relieve over 20,000 Chinese refugees. The medical relief activities of the Wuhan Sanatorium not only met the needs of Chinese society during the war but also served as an opportunity for church evangelism, reflecting the active adaptation of Western Christian churches to Chinese society during the war of resistance.
