Guardians,Refugees,Prisoners:The Wartime Experiences and Narratives of Westerners in Zhejiang(1937-1945)
After the outbreak of the war of resistance,Westerners in the war zone also faced threats from the war.Relying on the protection of diplomatic treaties, most Westerners in China were able to extricate them-selves from difficult situations. Some Western expatriates in Zhejiang, motivated by a spirit of humanitarian-ism,used their status as nationals of neutral countries to protect Chinese civilians, provide relief to refugees, and even documented Japanese atrocities.Amidst the intense fighting, the rights and interests of Western expatriates were violated by Japanese forces. After the Pearl Harbor Incident,American and British expatriates in occupied areas were imprisoned in concentration camps by the Japanese, becoming prisoners and losing their freedom. At the same time,Western expatriates at the front lines, like Chinese civilians, fled to the rear areas to escape the fires of war.Research on the history of refugees during the war of re-sistance necessitates incorporating Western expatriates in China within its scope of discussion.
