The Unity Dream of Liang Shuming and the National Rural Work Discussion Society in the 1930s
In the early 20th century, the widespread decline in agriculture and rural areas across the nation prompted extensive social actions among intellectual groups to rescue the countryside.Subsequently, rural workers from various regions across the country unanimously intended to establish a national coalition of ru-ral service personnel. In 1933,1934,and 1935,under the diligent efforts of Liang Shuming,Yan Yangchu,Huang Yanpei,Zhang Yuanshan, and others, three National Rural Work Conferences were con-vened successively. The conferences saw participation from groups and representatives covering north to south across the country, with significant involvement from the Central Party Department, the central government's agriculture, education, finance departments, local governments, media, and foreign individuals, creating a vast influence. However, under such circumstances, the National Rural Work Discussion Society remained a loose coalition without official registration.Various rural construction groups, based on different political environments and perspectives on Chinese issues, had numerous disagreements in the approaches to rural improvement, pursuit goals, focus areas, and operational mechanisms, making it difficult to have an overall blueprint for the rural construction movement as a whole. The"isolated island"phenomenon in the rural construction work remained unchanged.
