The Image of Chicago Immigrant Slum from the Perspective of Environmental Racism(1880-1920)
In the late 19th century,a large number of Southeast European immigrants entered American cities,which brought unprecedented impact to the development of Chicago.One notable effect was the formation of immigrant slums.During the modernization in the United States,there has always been environmental racism against marginalized groups.For example,Southeast European immigrants were defined as inferior races who suffered from the environmental injustices of the capitalist system.Influenced by class divisions,racial prejudices and municipal corruptions,the immigration settlement was regarded as"slum"because of its poverty,disease and squalor.In the conceptions of different races,classes and interest groups,its im-age presented multidimensional aspects.Exploring the formation and development of immigrant slums is im-portant for broadening the history of the struggle between racial and environmental justice.
