A Study on Wang Guowei's Translation of Lecture Notes of Paul Pelliot
Wang Guowei retranslated Paul Pelliot's lecture notes"Les influences iraniennes en Asie centrale et en Extrême-Orient"in 1919,based on the Japanese version by Sakaki Ryōsaburō.Wang's translation pub-lished on Guoxue Jikan(Chinese Studies Quarterly),and then was included in Guantang Yigao(Translated Manuscripts by Guantang).Although Pelliot's essay was primarily an introductory lecture,it greatly inspired and influenced Wang Guowei's academic research. It was generally believed that Wang Guowei's shift to the study of northwestern history and the history of the Mongols in his later years was influenced by Shen Zengzhi who specialized in this field. However,in fact,it was after reading the Japanese translation of Pelliot's article that Wang Guowei consciously paid attention to the history and language issues of the West-ern Regions.Pelliot's lecture should be regarded as the direct cause of his academic turn.
