In France,Brittany is known for its long-standing tradition of regionalism. This strong regional identity can be seen as the direct legacy of the political and cultural interactions occurring during the French annexation of Brittany in the later 15th and 16th centuries,in which Anne de Bretagne played a major role.As Duchess of Brittany,Anne promoted the particularity of the duchy and its lineage via sponsorship of the historical writing and participation in the Tro Breiz,a regional Catholic pilgrimage, and thus became the significant symbol of local memory.Meanwhile,as Queen of France, the image Anne represented in royal ceremonies served propaganda of the"unity"of the kingdom. After Anne's death, the rewriting of Brittany's history and the re-creation of her image became significant in the efforts of the Estates of Brittany to preserve their provincial"privileges and liberties".These efforts were increasingly subject to royal restriction.A better understanding of the earlier forms of the symbiotic relationship, and of the tension between regionalism and French national identity, can thus be derived from the study of the interaction of both parties.
