Abstract
Both Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels were deeply engaged with the dynamics of the American Civil War and obtained relevant information through books, newspapers, letters,European exiles, and other transatlantic networks. They attempted to"participate"as they could,by writing commentaries to influence public opinion and foreign policy in Europe and the United States. To promote the global labor movement,Marx was firmly opposed to slavery, constructed a new image of Abraham Lincoln, and offered accurate assessments of the war's nature, course, and outcomes.Marx's focus on the American Civil War reflects his unique understanding of the United States and the broader views on human freedom and social development.
