Conflict Between Tradition and Modernity:the School Disturbance Incidents in Guang'an Prefecture in the Late Qing Dynasty
During the New Deal in the late Qing Dynasty, there were two school disturbance incidents in Guang'an prefecture, which were related to the rebuilding of temples into schools, the droughts in Renyin and Jiachen, and the local belief and custom of"karma".The government, when dealing with the school disturbance incidents, upheld the belief of"being compassionate to the people",gave respective punishments, and temporarily calmed the situation, but did not put an end to the trend of destroying schools. Then the trend of destroying schools rose all over the country. The essence behind the trend of destroying schools was the traditional and modern confrontation in local academic affairs, which also reflected the huge resistance that the New Deal in the late Qing Dynasty encountered when it was implemented at the grass-roots level with deep-rooted traditional forces.
