Formation of Modern Mining Higher Education of China Under the Influence of Western Learning Spreading Eastward
After the Opium War,under the impact of unequal treaties, western learning was spread into China again that had been further expanded from the coast to the hinterland. Thus, schools were set up to meet the urgent needs of foreign invested enterprises for skilled personnel, which promoted the transformation of the traditional Chinese education. In 1898,the Peking Syndicate Limited obtained the rights of running the railway and mining schools in China under the treaty of mining in Shanxi and Henan provinces. After that, they began to plan and build the schools based on the western education mode, which became the window and bridge of western learning spreading eastward. However, the formal establishment of the Railway and Mining School was not accomplished in one step.Shanxi province tried to redeem the mining right but failed while Henan province succeeded after several negotiations. In 1909,the railway and mining school was established in the mining area of Jiaozuo,Henan, namely Jiaozuo College of Railways and Mines. The establishment of Jiaozuo College of Railways and Mines initiated the modern higher education of mining in China.
