Low Carbon City Construction and Tourism Development:Empirical Evidence from Chinese Cities
With the promotion of carbon peak and neutrality(dual-carbon)strategy,green and low carbon development has become the direction of transformation of various industrial sectors.As an important policy tool to achieve the goal of"dual carbon",can low carbon city pilot achieve both economic and environmental benefits?Based on the panel data of 284 cities at prefecture level and above in China from 2005 to 2019,this paper takes the construction of low carbon cities as a quasi-natural experiment and evaluates the effect and mechanism of low carbon city construction on tourism development by using a difference-in-difference model.Results show as follows:(1)the construction of low carbon city can significantly promote the development of tourism in pilot areas,specifically reflected in the increase of regional tourism income and tourist scale.This result is still valid after a series of robustness tests.(2)The construction of low carbon city promote tourism development mainly through improving urban environment,stimulating tourism innovation and enriching the ways of tourism.(3)The effect of low carbon city construction on tourism development is heterogeneous due to regional tourism resource endowment,tourism service level,domestic and inbound tourism types,which shows that the effect is more obvious in regions with rich tourism resources and perfect tourism services,and domestic tourism market.The conclusion of this paper means that low carbon city construction can help achieve the win-win goal of pollution reduction and tourism development,which provides beneficial policy enlightenment for the country to promote green transformation and high-quality tourism development in the new era.
