The prevalence of illegitimate tasks in the hospitality industry and their detrimental consequences on hotel employees have been widely recognized.However,most of the existing studies have explored the negative effects of illegitimate tasks on the job performance of hotel employees,we still know little about how such tasks affect hotel employees'negative work behaviors,as well as their intervening mechanisms.Based on a four-wave survey of 411 hotel frontline employees in China,the results show that illegitimate tasks exerts a significantly positive influence on work withdrawal behavior;work meaningfulness and harmonious passion both mediate the relationship between illegitimate tasks and work withdrawal behavior;work meaningfulness and harmonious passion play a chain mediating effect between illegitimate tasks and work withdrawal behavior;employee's learning goal orientation weakened the impact of illegitimate tasks on work meaningfulness and harmonious passion respectively,as well as the chain mediating effects of work meaningfulness and harmonious passion.The results of this study reveal the mechanism of illegitimate tasks on the negative work behaviors of hotel employees and their boundary conditions,which are enlightening for hotel companies and managers to deal with illegitimate tasks.
