On the Image of HAN Yu in the Notes Novels During the Tang and the Five Dynasties
HAN Yu,a famous scholar living in the Tang Dynasty, whose image has become deified in the notes no-vels of the Tang and the Five Dynasties.Three symbols can be seen in creating deified image of HAN Yu:his abili-ty to recognize Chinese-red seal script, his fight against the enemy country after his death, and his prediction of his fate from the peony poems. The historical basis of such image creation in the novels lay in HAN Yu's personal life experience and the pro-Taoism tendency revealed in his poetry and literature. The deeper reason for the transforma-tion of HAN Yu's image into the immortal spirit was the ambivalence of the scholars to seek the immortal and es-cape from the real world under the social background of war and mediocrity in the middle and late Tang Dynasty,a reflection of scholars'loneliness and confusion about reality.
