A Research on Water Conservancy Inscriptions and Countermeasures Against Floods in the Heluo Region
Floods have been frequently occurring in the Heluo area since ancient times,and the records of floods and the social countermeasures are not only kept in official documents,local chronicles and other historical materials,but also found in the water conservancy inscriptions in the area.There are various types of water conservancy in-scriptions in the Heluo area,including chronicle inscriptions,litigation inscriptions,water regulation inscriptions,and belief inscriptions.The inscriptions usually give account of the local flood situation and the response measures taken such as building embankments for flood control,opening channels for drainage,and providing relief to disas-ter victims.Floods frequently occurring in the Heluo area,folk temples are built to worship water gods in Chinese mythology like Dragon King,Dayu,and HUANG Dawang.As a local cultural landscape,water conservancy in-scriptions not only truthfully record local water conservancy events,but also contain understanding,evaluation,and collective memory of the history.
