A Comparative Study of the English Translation of Official Titles in The Historical Records from the Perspective of Culture-specific Items
Official titles in ancient China bear profound cultural implications,and its English translation is constrained by multiple factors such as text types,language features,social and cultural contexts,translation purposes,translators and readers.Based on Aixelá's theory of Culture-specific Items,this study comparatively analyzes the official titles in The Historical Records translated by William H.Nienhauser,Yang Xianyi and Gladys B.Tayler(Gladys Yang).It is found that nine translation methods are involved in both of the two translations,such as pre-established translation and limited universalization,but they differ in distribution.Nienhauser prefers the strategy of foreignization to retain its original style,and annotations are added in detail for readers;Yang's translation adopts the domestication strategy more frequently,such as universalization and naturalization,to narrow the gap between the text and readers.
