The adaptability of Liriodendron chinense introduced from different provenances to Nanjing
To study the adaptability of competition and the growth performance of seedlings among different provenances, the seedlings of Liriodendron chinense from 13 provenances cultivated in Nanjing region had been observed and investigated across five consecutive years. The results showed that:the conservative rates of the seedlings were significantly different.Liping provenance exhibited stronger adaptability with the preserving rate of 72%,while which of the Zherong provenance was merely 8%.According to the growth performance, the tree height,DBH (diameter of breast-height) and annual height growth also presented the significant difference among different provenances.Considering comprehensive comparison of the preserving rate and the growth,Liping,Hefeng and Songyang provenances exhibited better, and they could be selected as superior provenances in Nanjing. However,Lushan,Hanzhong and Jinping provenances exhibited worse, which showed that they were not suitable for introduction and cultivation in Nanjing.During the course of the experiments, great numbers of seedlings from Zherong provenances died. The cause lay in the fact that the individuals mainly came from inbreeding population, and the inbreeding depression might be the main factors influencing the lower preserving rate.
