The factors affecting pull-out strength of glubam joints with glued-in rods
The widespread adoption of green and eco-friendly principles has led to a growing attention of applying glu-bam materials in the furniture manufacturing industry. However, the issue of connection joints in glubam furniture has always been a significant factor limiting its performance.Glubam furniture, such as floor hangers and floor lamps, suffer from insufficient strength of the main pole joints and poor aesthetics.Previously, the glubam glued-in rod con-nection was mainly used for square beam-column joints in constructions.Glued-in rods connection technique has been widely recognized to significantly improve the pull-out strength of bamboo and timber component joints. It does not af-fect the aesthetic appearance due to its built-in characteristic.Although the glued-in rods connection technique has been widely used in square beam-column joints in the construction, this study aimed at applying this technique to glubam furniture round pole joints in the product area. After changing the shape of the glubam glued-in rod joints,it is neces-sary to determine the rationalized design parameters through experimental analysis in order to improve the pull-out strength of the joints. In this study, round poles with glubam glued-in rods were selected as research objects, the fac-tors such as edge distance of the glued-in rod, thickness of the gluing layer and slenderness ratio of the glued-in rod were considered as research variables.Specimens in pull-pull configuration were tested and the failure modes of the specimens and the ultimate loads of the joints were recorded. It was observed that the specimens exhibited three differ-ent failure modes, including glubam cracking, shear failure along the rod and yielding of the rod.The test results showed that the ratio of the diameter of the glubam to that of the glued-in rod should be not less than eight to prevent glubam cracking. The glue thickness had a significant effect on pull-out strength, but it should not be too large. When the diameter of the glued-in rod is 4 mm,the glue thickness can be set to 1.0-1.5 mm.The joint ultimate load was in-creased with the increase of the slenderness ratio of glued-in rod.To control yield failure mode, the lower limit of slenderness ratio could be taken as 15 for glued-in rods of M4 and M8.The test results provided data support for the design of glubam floor hanger joints, which can be used as a reference for the optimization design of subsequent glu-bam products.Based on the test data,a strength model was also proposed for the glued-in rods in glubam, and the model presented a good prediction accuracy.
