Influence of coating technology on performance of coated wood surface
To investigate the effects of two different coating technologies on the surface of silicate-modified poplar wood(Populus tomentosa),this experiment used water-based polyurethane varnish and water-based acrylic varnish to compare the two coating processes,i.e.,bottom integration and bottom separation technologies. The effects of brushing times on the adhesion, glossiness, wood color, film wear resistance, and film hardness of silicate-modified poplar wood and unmodified poplar wood were analyzed. The results showed that, when the modified poplar wood was coated with the bottom integrated coating technology, with a maximum of one coat(coating amount of about 140 g/m2),the unmodified poplar wood was coated with one coat(coating amount of about 140 g/m2),resulting in better paint film adhesion on the wood surface. The modified poplar tangential section adopted the bottom separate coating technology, with one or two coats of primer and one or two coats of topcoat(with a coating amount of 140-240 g/m2),for the unmodified poplar tangential sections,at least three coats of primer and three coats of topcoat(with a coating amount of around 440 g/m2)were applied, resulting in better paint film adhesion on the wood surface. The glossiness of the modified poplar wood was worse than that of the unmodified poplar wood and the modified poplar wood had a uniform coating process on the bottom surface, with a maximum of three coats(coating amount of about 340 g/m2)and two or three coats(coating amount of 240-340 g/m2)of the unmodified poplar wood. The surface achieved a good glossiness ratio(GZB)after applying the separate coating technology for the bottom surface, with two or three coats of modified poplar primer and two or three coats of topcoat(with a coating amount of 240-340 g/m2),one or two coats of the unmodified poplar primer and one or two coats of topcoat(with a coating amount of 140-240 g/m2).The surface brightness index and red-green index of the unmodified poplar wood were higher than those of the modified poplar wood with different coating technologies, and the changes were not significant when the coating time increased. The yellow-blue color index of the modified poplar wood was higher than that of the unmodified poplar wood, and there was little change in the yellow-blue color index when the brushing time increased. The modified poplar wood paint film had better wear resistance than that of the unmodified poplar wood. When the modified poplar wood bottom surface coated in one coating process with one or two coats(coating amount of 140-240 g/m2),the radial section surface achieved better wear resistance of the paint film.By applying two or three coats(with a coating amount of 240-340 g/m2)to the tangential surface, the paint film had good wear resistance. The hardness of the modified poplar wood paint film was better than that of the unmodified poplar wood. The integrated coating technology of the modified poplar wood bottom surface was better than the separate coating technology of the bottom surface. The hardness of the paint film was better when the radial and tangential sections coated at least four times(with a coating amount of about 440 g/m2).The micromorphology test results of the bonding between the paint film and the substrate showed that the cracks between the modified material paint film and the substrate were consistent with the evaluation of the paint film adhesion results.
