Starting from the working principle of the near ground airborne LiDAR,this paper analyzes the technical advantages of this technology in obtaining the information of terrain and landform and surface vegetation coverage in forestry investigation, and takes the self-developed point cloud data post-processing software as an example to describe in detail the technical methods of obtaining single tree information, tree height, crown width, tree number and canopy density from the airborne lidar data. Finally, according to the ap-plication of the airborne lidar in forestry, through comparison and analysis with traditional forestry survey and monitoring technologies,it is concluded that the current airborne lidar has its own advantages in tree height, canopy density, number of trees, etc.,and can re-place traditional work, but it still needs technical and theoretical improvement in stock volume survey, point cloud data processing algo-rithm.
