Based on the CFPS2018 microdata,the study empirically analyzes the impact of family elder care on the income gap of farm households using the relative income deprivation index to dynamically measure the income gap of farm households.The study finds that family elder care significantly widens the farm household income gap,and the impact is more obvious on low-income and female groups,and the results remain robust after dealing with endogeneity.Mechanism analysis shows that family elder care indirectly widens the farm household income gap by affecting the labor mobility decision of farm households,which is manifested in limiting the distance of their labor mobility and reducing the stability of employment,Meanwhile the complementary function of social care can better reduce the income gap of rural households.In this regard,recommendations have been made to actively explore new models of rural mutual care for the elderly,to increase opportunities for wage employment in close proximity,and to formulate differentiated rural old-age care programmes in order to alleviate the burden of old-age care on the family and to reduce the disparity in the income of farm households.
