In her maiden work Portrait of a Thief, the contemporary Chinese-American fiction writer Grace Li takes the chivalrous act of the protagonist Will and his friends who travel around the world to bring looted relics back to China as the clue of narration, expressing her profound thoughts on the dual cultural identity of the new-generation Chinese-Americans.Based on Stuart Hall's theory on cultural identity, along with the traditional Chinese chivalrous culture, this paper explores the cultural identity construction of the new-generation Chinese-Americans represented by Will.Li's narration of Will and his friends'long journey reveal their marginal status in American society.Through retelling the ethnic history and culture related to the bronze statues in the form of 12 Chinese zodiac signs of the Old Summer Palace, she tries to establish the cultural identity of the new-generation Chinese-Americans.The paper analyzes the social and cultural causes of their identity dilemma, and also explores how they can construct a hybrid cultural identity integrating Chinese and Western cultures based on their ethnic traditional cultures,so as to better integrate into the mainstream American society.
