Classical prose represents the essence of Chinese literary expression,and its translation into English constitutes a vital component of the study of translating classical texts.Compared to Western theories which primarily focus on linguistic conversion,Chinese Compositional Translatology adhering to the principle of"translation is essentially writing",provides more effective guidance for translating classical prose.This paper,under the guidance of Compositional Translatology,taking the translation of The Mansion of Willow written by Liu Dakui of Tongcheng School as a study case,explores the applicability of Tongcheng School's Wenqi theory in English translation of classical Chinese prose.The study suggests that English translation of classical Chinese prose should adhere closely to the source text's stylistic composition,incorporating the concept of"matching in literary strength"throughout,to ensure that the translated text resonates in terms of phonetics,semantics,and structure with the original,achieving a state of seamless integration and natural fluency.
