Narrative Differences and Political Secrecy of Empress Zhang in the New and Old Tang History
Empress Zhang was recorded by historians as a typical example of disaster to the country. She rose to take charge of authority during the crisis of Emperor Suzong of the Tang Dynasty. In the historical context of the An-Shi Rebellion, she failed in the struggle for the imperial authority and later was deposed as a commoner by the prestigious Empress, thus eventually died in seclusion. However, the subtle narrative differences of Empress Zhang in The Old Tang History and The New Tang History indicated that her image was intentionally constructed in the his-torical narration, because Empress Zhang was involved in the power struggle between Emperor Xuanzong and Em-peror Suzong, the struggle among kings during Emperor Suzong, and the complex vortex of supreme power struggle such as the succession of Emperor Daizong, thus her manipulation of power and the harm to the country was strengthened, ultimately becoming a victim of political secrecy.
