Pursuit of Tao by Means of Music:Another Inquiry about Ji Kang's Philosophy
People always take"extension of instincts beyond Confucian ethical codes"as the core of Ji Kang's philosophy, but Ji Kang's music philosophy proves to be the essence.Ji Kang advocated pursuit of Tao by means of music which focused on applying philosophical inquiry to music, exploring the universe with music, and reflec-ting on life with music. From the epochal theme of metaphysics in the Wei and Jin Dynasties,Ji Kang apperceived the philosophical nature of music and solved the problem of metaphysics from the perspective of music. In Ji Kang's philosophy, pursuit of Tao by means of music is a top-down process.,which indicates that only when music is high-er than Tao can metaphysics be clearly understood.Ji Kang used music to understand the existence and non-exist-ence of the universe and construct the foundation of metaphysics.Meanwhile,he distinguished the body and the function of efforts by means of music to unfold the change of mind and nature.Furthermore,he forgot the cognitive meaning of words to establish an attitude towards life.Ji Kang integrated Confucianism with Taoism, combined the cultural tradition of Confucianism with the spiritual temperament of Taoism, and formed the value pattern with coex-istence of art and morality plus coexistence of aesthetics and ethics.
