Toulmin's Strategy for Treatment of Rationalism Imbalance
Rationality and irrationality present two aspects of dialectical unity in human spiritual activities.Toulmin found that absolutizing or rejecting scientific methods had a polarized influence on rationality in the 20th century.Based on the social and cultural background of scientific development in modern times,Toulmin analyzed the social roots for rationalism crisis:one was to deny history, the other was to yield to history. The extremes of both tendencies resulted in rational imbalance.Toulmin made a treatment of rationalism imbalance based on post-modern vision. On the one hand,Toulmin re-examined modern rationality, and advocated rebuilding the balance between theory and practice, logic and rhetoric, and rationality and reasonableness. On the other hand,Toulmin advocated paying attention to the real situation in the process of scientific evolution to restore rationality.
