"On-site"to"Memory":The Formation and Underlying Mechanism of Memorable Tourism Experience
In the era of the experience economy, providing memorable tourism experiences has become the core competitive advantage of tourism destinations.Tourism experience has thus been extensively studied in academia. However, extant research has spatially emphasized tourism experience in unusual environments and temporally focused on on-site experience. The post-hoc memorable experience in the usual environment lacks attention. Therefore, the current study aimed to fill this gap by investigating tourism activities on urban leisure greenways and examining tourism experiences both"on-site"and"back home".Through a longitudinal track and analysis of experience from"on-site"to"back home",the final purpose of this study was to uncover the formation process and feedback mechanism of experience memory.Based on a two-stage investigation of 55 respondents in five urban greenways, the main findings based on thematic analysis and system dynamic analysis were compelling.Firstly, greenway visitors'on-site experience revolved around the"existential self".Through immersive interactions with others, environment, and self, greenway visitors can obtain existential feelings and positive emotions, further social self-existence,spiritual self-satisfaction,and value-based self-identification,thus leading to the liminal experience of"existential self".Second, the details of on-site experience faded over time, while the experience perceived and felt by then were retained as affective appreciation, satisfaction, and identification and became unforgettable experiences in memory. Moreover, the study proposed a comprehensive systematic model outlining the formation process of experience memory and its underlying positive feedback for revisits. The liminal"on-site"experience was conductive to the formation of affective memory and the human-environment affinity, encouraging visitors'return to greenways.However,this"on-site perception—liminal self—affective memory—affective connection—behavioral motivation"feedback was counteracted by a negative feedback of experience memory. With increasing greenway visits, the distinction between greenway tourism experience and daily life diminished, thus weakening the"on-site"liminal experience. The interplay between positive and negative feedback formed the S-shaped curve model of experiential memory formation.Theoretically, the study significantly advances our understanding of the essence and formation mechanism of visitors· experience memory.Practically, this study offers practical insights by identifying crucial elements that constitute a memorable experience for visitors. These findings provide valuable directions for the design and planning of tourism experiences in urban leisure destinations, ensuring they remain memorable and appealing to visitors.
