How"Getting Married"Promotes"Starting a Career"?A Study on Rural Tourism Entrepreneurial Performance Based on the Embeddedness Theory
Under the context of rural revitalization, industrial transformation and rural tourism development serve as crucial approaches to foster rural economic and industrial growth. The distinctive geo-cultural characteristics of Chinese rural society empower the rural relationship network to play a pivotal role in facilitating industrial entrepreneurship and enhancing productivity transformation.Scholars have extensively examined the influence of social networks on entrepreneurial activities regarding rural tourism entrepreneurship. However, current research tends to oversimplify social networks and needs more in-depth analysis regarding how network embedding can contribute to entrepreneurial performance;meanwhile, the distinctive role of marital relationships in this process needs to be further addressed.Based on the embeddedness theory, this study employs a combination of questionnaire surveys and in-depth interviews to investigate the impact of embeddedness on entrepreneurial performance within China's typical rural areas.Additionally,it explores the influence mechanism of entrepreneurs'marital status on their entrepreneurial ability and performance. The findings are as follows:(1)Embeddedness positively influences tourism entrepreneurial performance through tourism entrepreneurial ability, with tourism entrepreneurial ability as an intermediary between embeddedness and entrepreneurial performance.(2)Compared to single entrepreneurs, married entrepreneurs demonstrate greater effectiveness in translating their entrepreneurial ability into entrepreneurial performance, indicating that marriage status moderates the relationship between entrepreneurial ability and entrepreneurial performance.(3)Regarding different dimensions of entrepreneurial ability, marriage generates varying moderating effects.Marriage status significantly moderates the relationship between the subdivision dimensions(i.e.,opportunity ability, organizational and management ability, strategic ability, and commitment ability)and tourism entrepreneurial performance. Our findings provide theoretical contributions.Firstly, this study expands the existing literature by exploring the mechanism through which embeddedness affects entrepreneurship and identifies the mediating role played by tourism entrepreneurial ability in the relationship between embeddedness and entrepreneurial performance within rural tourism contexts, thus enriching the theoretical framework for rural tourism entrepreneurship research.Secondly,we identify marriage as a moderator that impacts the relationship between tourism entrepreneurial abilities and overall entrepreneurial performance, thereby providing empirical evidence linking family entrepreneurship with rural tourism development.Thirdly,we construct a theoretical model highlighting marital differences in relation to overall entrepreneurial performance, offering supplementary insights into small-scale enterprise research. This paper also provides practical implications. We argue that entrepreneurial enterprises and industry organizations should strive to build a platform for entrepreneurs to exchange ideas and utilize their relationship networks to achieve win-win cooperation.Besides, considering the critical role of marital differences, local governments should provide diverse skill training programs for rural entrepreneurs to stimulate the enthusiasm of tourism entrepreneurs. In summary, this study focuses on the rural tourism context to investigate how marriage influences career initiation by examining the mediating role of entrepreneurial capability and the moderating effect of marital relationships. The findings offer targeted guidance and recommendations for supporting and enhancing rural entrepreneurship as well as promoting sustainable development in rural tourism destinations.
