Tourism and the Sustainable Development of Traditional Handicrafts from a Socio-material Perspective:A Case Study of Dongguan Guanxiang
The development of the tourism industry provides new scenarios and opportunities for the protection,revitalization,and inheritance of traditional handicrafts.However,the innovation of raw materials and production techniques driven by modernization and commercialization may create tension and contradictions with their original materiality.This article focuses on the traditional handicraft of Guanxiang in Dongguan and discusses the opportunities and challenges of sustainable development of traditional handicraft under the context of tourism place construction and tourism development,from a socio-material perspective.Through in-depth interviews with 30 actors and participatory observation of the planting,processing,and trade of Guanxiang,it reveals how traditional handicrafts,as important material entities,are closely linked to local economy and local culture through their materiality.In this process,the transformation and innovation of traditional handicrafts and the controversies and contradictions arising from their materiality are also examined.The study found that:1)the long incense formation temporal cycle,harsh incense formation conditions,and unique aroma of Guanxiang make its production inseparable from Dongguan's geographical environment and the specific skills mastered by local farmers.Guanxiang has become a local symbol and has formed Guanxiang culture,including customs related to fragrance,various uses and practices around its aroma,etc.2)The combination with tourism development has revitalized the Guanxiang-related rechniques,culture,and industry,and has produced innovations and transformations in its product form,production techniques,inheritance scenarios,and fragrance market trade that meet the needs of tourism and modern production.3)The material characteristics of Guanxiang have triggered a series of contradictions related to plant protection and incense extraction,quality and efficiency,uniqueness and standardization,embodiment experience,quality and value,which pose challenges to the sustainable development of Guanxiang craft industry.By introducing the concept of materiality under the philosophy of new materialism,this article deepens the research on traditional handicrafts under the background of cultural tourism integration,reveals the unique role of materiality in their protection,inheritance and development,and promotes the sustainable development of Guanxiang in practice.
