The Multiple Effects of Cultural Inheritance-based Innovation at Heritage Tourism Destinations on Tourist Behaviors:Integrating Social and Market Perspectives
Cultural innovation is viewed as an important practice for tourism destinations to promote cultural revitalization, enhance market competitiveness and improve the tourist experience. It creates and improves cultural products and services primarily through the introduction of modern elements, creativity, and aesthetics. However,as the pursuit of cultural innovation at heritage tourism destinations increases, many contradictions and conflicts between inheritance conservation and the innovative development of tourism destination culture have arisen. This problem may easily have negative impacts on the sustainable development of local traditional culture. Therefore,it is important to grasp the impact of cultural innovation on cultural inheritance conservation at heritage tourism destinations.Cultural inheritance-based innovation(CIBI)is an inheritance-oriented cultural innovation practice that helps resolve the conflicts between cultural inheritance and innovation at heritage tourism destinations, thus avoiding a crisis in local cultural inheritance.Accordingly, exploring the impact of CIBI is an important opportunity to achieve the culturally sustainable development of heritage tourism destinations. However, there is a lack of understanding and discussion of the components and influences of CIBI in academia. In particular, heritage tourism involves social and market dimensions, and the role of tourists in cultural consumption and social participation at heritage tourism destinations is increasingly critical. However,to date, few scholars have explored the multiple impacts of CIBI on tourist behaviors at heritage tourism destinations from both social and market perspectives. This research gap is not conducive to the practical role of CIBI in the sociocultural and tourism market development of heritage tourism destinations. Therefore, there is an urgent need to incorporate tourist engagement into the long-term planning objectives of cultural innovation at heritage tourism destinations and to comprehensively explore the effects of CIBI on tourist behaviors. To address the above issues, this study first extracted the structural dimensions of CIBI at heritage tourism destinations through grounded theory and generated the CIBI scale.Second,a multi-dimensional model of the impact of CIBI on tourists'behaviors is constructed by integrating social and market perspectives, and the model is empirically tested using structural equation modeling(SEM).Our results indicate that CIBI at heritage tourism destinations consists of four dimensions(i.e.,cultural authentic production, cultural creative dissemination, cultural living display, and cultural transforming creation)and 13 elements. In addition,CIBI at heritage tourism destinations has both social and market effects. It can inspire heritage protection, value co-creation,and destination loyalty through a chain of mediating effects of experience quality and cultural attachment.Theoretically, this study provides a comprehensive insight into the theoretical process by which CIBI at heritage tourism destinations influences multiple tourist behaviors. Moreover, this study offers an integrated perspective and methodological tool for research on cultural innovation and sustainable development at tourism destinations. In practice, our findings promote the development of localized theory and CIBI practices at heritage tourism destinations and provide theoretical references for managers to effectively exploit the positive effects of CIBI at heritage tourism destinations.
