The Path and Mechanism of the Tourism Utilization of the Grand Canal Heritage from an Evolutionary Perspective:A Case Study of Cities along the Jiangsu-Zhejiang Section of the Grand Canal
Deepening the integration of cultural and tourism development constitutes a primary objective of the construction of the Grand Canal Cultural Belt and National Cultural Park, with a critical focus on optimizing and innovating the tourism utilization of heritage resources. This paper concentrates on the 13 cities along the Jiangsu-Zhejiang section of the Grand Canal, primarily drawing from policy texts spanning 2010 to 2023 as the principal data source.Through employing path dependence theory and corrected hypothesis of"origin-dynamics",the study takes an evolutionary perspective to systematically explore the paths and mechanism of heritage tourism utilization along the Grand Canal. The study reveals the following:1)the tourism utilization path system is composed of 3 dimensions based on"cultural tourism integration characteristics-heritage characteristics-local characteristics",which logically resonates with the"touristification-heritagization-glocalization"in tourism research.2)The evolution logic of tourism utilization paths exhibits significant heterogeneity, and path differentiation emerges in the direction of evolution.High-endowed cities enter the path of creation, while low-endowed cities are more prone to path dependence.Notably,low-endowed cities like Shaoxing and Huzhou have also achieved path creation.3)Regarding evolutionary mechanism, heritage endowment constitutes the"origin"factor of tourism utilization.Factors like city-river spatial relationships, ability of cultural and tourism integration development, government support, and market demand act as"dynamics"factors. The successful application for the World Heritage represents an external impact.Furthermore, the"origin"plays a core role in path differentiation, and through its complementary effect with the"dynamics"factors,high-endowed cities are more likely to enter path creation. The complementary and synergistic effects among different"dynamics"factors strengthen the continuity of paths for high-endowed cities as well as elucidate the reasons behind the path creation in low-endowed cities. The successful application for World Heritage promotes path creation in tourism utilization through its regulatory function. The innovations of this paper lie in three key aspects.First,by utilizing policy texts, this paper discusses the tourism utilization paths of cities along the Grand Canal for their heritage, thereby expanding the data sources for related research.Second, based on the research of heritage tourism related to heritagization and touristification, this paper captures the practical logic of glocalization, contributing novel knowledge to the field of heritage tourism.Third, through the revision and testing of the hypothesis of"origin-dynamics",combined with text coding to identify path dependence and path creation, this paper analyzes the tourism utilization paths and mechanism from an evolutionary perspective, further improving the theoretical tools and quantitative methods for the evolution of tourist destinations.
