The Impact of Regional Innovation Activity on Innovation Strategy and Growth of Rural Accommodation Enterprises:A Simulation Study Based on Agent-based Modeling
With the vigorous growth of rural tourism, rural tourism enterprises are continuously emerging. These enterprises have become crucial in promoting rural revitalization and achieving shared prosperity. As rural tourism enterprises develop, researchers have increasingly focused on various practical issues regarding their development.A focal topic is how to achieve the growth of rural tourism enterprises.Entrepreneurs need to make critical decisions regarding innovation—whether to innovate and how to do so.Choosing between independent and imitative innovation can have varying impacts on enterprise growth. Moreover, the choices made by enterprises regarding innovation will affect individuals at the micro-level and have repercussions on the broader regional industrial aspects of the rural tourism system. In existing research, most scholars primarily focus on explaining the"static"outcomes of innovation choices of rural tourism enterprises.Nonetheless,in rural tourism areas, complexity and uncertainty pose significant challenges for rural tourism enterprises during their development. Therefore,it is imperative to conduct further in-depth studies on the role of micro/macro linkages and dynamic processes within the rural tourism system.Furthermore, research grounded in computational science and complex systems theory has recently surfaced in social sciences. The new approach employs agent-based modeling to analyze intricate interactions and evolutionary processes in economic and social systems. It addresses aspects that received less attention in prior research, including individual heterogeneity, interactions among multiple actors,micro/macro linkages, and the dynamic evolution of interaction relationships.Hence, this paper employs agent-based modeling and computational experimental methods to simulate the dynamic interactions between local and external accommodation enterprises and tourists in Yixian county. After generating simulation results, the simulated enterprise samples are classified into four categories based on the frequency of independent and imitative innovations:dual innovation, independent innovation, imitative innovation, and innovation refusal. Moreover, different types of enterprises concerning average room prices, monthly net income, and cumulative income were compared. The objective is to reveal the interaction between macro-level regional innovation activity and micro-level enterprise innovation choices and their impact on growth. The findings underscore the following four points.First, the effect of regional innovation activity on firm growth shows nonlinear characteristics.Second, improving regional innovation activity will accelerate the"differentiation"of rural accommodation enterprises.Third,in the complex practice of rural tourism,no innovation strategy exists that can guarantee the success of enterprises.Fourth, local and external firms show different growth characteristics under the interaction of regional innovation activity and innovation strategy. To some extent, the research findings contribute to exploring dynamic relationships between micro-level individual behavior and regional industries from a"bottom-up"perspective.These findings enhance our understanding of the interaction mechanisms between rural tourism enterprise innovation choices and growth.Furthermore, they provide a new explanatory perspective for addressing the complexities within the tourism system.
