Electronic Life and General Organism Science:An Ontology of Life Orientation in the Intelligence Age
The advent of Intelligence Age raises a new question:Do intelligent digital beings possess the same"consciousness"as human beings? However,it is too early to answer it.Consciousness is a relatively advanced product in biology, and in the early stage of organic development, life is more important,so proba-bly we should consider how to define the concept of life in digital space, specifically, digital life composed of various electronic components, digital codes, and signals. We need to move beyond the traditional concept of life to understand the electronic life,as current understanding of life has transcended the organic life of pure organisms and constituted an organism science,in which the organic and inorganic intertwine. From the philosophies of Lucretius,Schrödinger,Maturana,Varela, and Raymond Rouyer,we can understand life as an autopoietic system. On this basis, the present paper suggests that electronic life establishes a balance of entropy and negentropy between the inner components of its autopoietic system and the external environ-ment.Additionally,the material interactions between human life forms and the surrounding environment through Simondon's technological objects will significantly expand the concept of life beyond that of the organism. In the Intelligence Age,technological objects have evolved into digital objects, and further into Stiegler's general organism science, and thus life has transformed into holistic beings as suggested in the Gaia Hypothesis.
