Geographic information system spatial analysis techniques were employed to investigate into the spatial distribution characteristics of national and provincial protected earthen heritage sites in Gansu Province, with a focus on engineering geological conditions and climate factors. These sites are pre-dominantly situated in plains, plateaus and hills characterized by a low altitude(<2 000 m),gentle slope(<15°),small topographic relief(<5 m)and proximity to rivers(<5 km),with the majority of them being located in Quaternary sedimentary areas and featuring predominantly primary soils. The earthen heritage sites in the Hexi Corridor and western regions of the province are in arid and semi-arid zones, while those in the east in semi-humid areas. There are significant differences in the climate of the regions where the earthen heritage sites are located from south to north.Through the kernel density analysis via the ArcGIS software,it was found that the density of earthen heritage sites in Gansu Province gradually increased from west to east, and were generally distributed along the main rivers and tributaries of the province. The selection of earthen heritage sites in different historical periods had been different due to their func-tional characteristics, which were mainly constrained by geological environmental conditions and also influenced by social productivity.
