Progress of Cholesterol Adsorbents Based on Host-Guest Recognition Utilizing β-Cyclodextrin
Cholesterol is an essential lipid molecule in the human body and plays a crucial role in the metabolic process.Cholesterol accumulation in the body is often closely related to atherosclerosis,Niemann Pick's disease type C and other diseases, but its clinical treatment suffers from the inconvenience arising from the side effects and contraindications of currently available drugs./-Cyclodextrin is a kind of natural cyclic molecules and can recognize cholesterol. The host-guest interaction between/-cyclodextrin and cholesterol can be used for selective adsorption and clearance of cholesterol. In this review,we summarize the recent progress of the preparation methods, design principles and research status of cholesterol adsorbents based on β-cyclodextrin's host-guest interaction, and demonstrate that β-cyclodextrin exhibits great potential as a functional adsorbent for the treatment of high-leveled cholesterol-related diseases.
