Applications of Lipoic Acid-Based Polymers in Biomedicine
Lipoic acid(LA)is a small molecular substance that widely exists in organisms.Because of its low melting temperature(60~62 ℃),LA is easy to undergo thermally initiated ring-opening polymerization via the dithiolane in its structure, resulting in the polymer holding disulfide bonds in the backbone with dynamic characteristics.LA derivatives can be obtained through a series of chemical reactions using the terminal carboxyl group, which is beneficial to extend the application of LA in biomedicine.LA and LA derivatives can also participate in free radical polymerization to produce polymers. This review summarizes the recent publications on LA-based polymers from three aspects—drug delivery, dynamic materials, and lipoic acid-protein or lipoic acid-saccharide conjugates,so as to provide an insight on functional applications of LA in biomedicine.
