Separation and Reunion in Migration:The Impact of Family Migration on Children's Human Capital
The separation of family members'residence has become the new normal of family development under China's population migration, and migrant children face separation and reunion with family members. This paper discusses the influence of family migration on children's human capital from the perspective of migrant family's living arrangement. It is found that the higher the degree of family integration, the better the cognitive and non-cognitive status of migrant children.Parent-child separation has a negative effect on the human capital of migrant children, and the cognitive ability and non-cognitive ability of migrant children who do not live with their parents lag significantly behind that of migrant children who live with their parents. At the same time, there are grandparents cohabitation effect and sibling cohabitation effect in family migration.Migrant children have significantly higher cognitive test scores and school academic achievements when living with grandparents, and higher cognitive test scores and better school adaptation ability when living with siblings. The policy design in the era of migration should provide full protection for family members'family reunion, and reduce the separation of family members in the process of migrant and the negative impact on children's growth and development.
