Research Progress in Development and Application of Nanocellulose-Based Micro/Nano Particle Filtration Materials
Nanocellulose extracted from biomass resources such as wood has been widely used in many fields owing to its unique nanostructure and superior performance.Due to the ultrafine size and the presence of many hydroxyl groups on surfaces, the materials assembled from nanocellulose intercept micro and nano-sized particles, while the pores between nanocellulose facilitate the water and other hydrophilic liquid rapidly passing through.Developing nanocellulose-based micro/nano-particle filtration materials not only benefits for the environmental purification and the micro/nano particle recycle, but also provides a novel route to improve the value of nanocellulose-based materials. In this paper, the research progress of the development and application of nanocellulose-based materials for micro/nano particle filtration was reviewed, including the nanocellulose types, preparation methods, and structural characteristics of nanocellulose obtained from various sources. It was summarized of the methods of constructing nanocellulose/electrospun fiber composites, cellulose nanopapers, and gel films using nanocellulose as building block. The filtrating separation of various types of micro/nano particles using different nanocellulose-based bulk materials was also elaborated. The remaining issues of this emerging research field were envisioned. The directions that need to be focused on in the future were proposed.
