Preparation and Performance of Meter-Scale Transparent Wood Veneer
Transparent wood is a new type of wood-based composites. The existing manufacturing technology can only prepare small-size samples, which was far below the requirement of industry scale application. In this study, birch(Betula sp.)veneer was used as raw material to prepare large-dimension decolorized wood veneer by bleaching treatment.Afterwards, the transparent wood with a length of 1 meter was prepared by impregnating epoxy resin under vacuum condiction. The results showed that the transparent wood has good light transmittance with the average light transmittance and haze of 76.7%and 81.4%,respectively.Because the epoxy resin was immersed in wood cells, the longitudinal and transverse tensile strengths of transparent wood were greater than those of original wood. Finally, the preparation process and cost of meter-scale transparent wood veneer were also analyzed. This study not only provided a reference for promoting the application of transparent wood in concealed spaces such as building patios, car skylights, offices, bathroom doors and windows, and partitions but also lays a theoretical foundation for the industry application of transparent wood.
