Research Progress on the Regulation and Utilization of Wood Pore Structure
The research on the synthesis and regulation of porous materials has gained significant interests in fields such as materials science, life science, and energy science. However, the synthesis process faces challenges such as high energy consumption and environmental friendliness. The development and utilization of green and sustainable porous materials urgently need to be studied.Wood is a natural porous material, which is sustainable, biodegradable, and easy to modify. The hierarchical porous structure is constituted of pores of different sizes such as cell lumen, pits, pores in the cell wall and inter-microfibril spaces.Nevertheless,as a porous material, the distribution of wood porous structure is uneven, and the pore type is relatively fixed. In order to achieve a wide range of applications, the pore structure need to be regulated.By regulating the size, shape, quantity, and connectivity of the pores, not only can the original physical properties of wood be improved, but also new functions can be given to it.In this review,we summarize the regulation methods for the porous structure of wood and the applications of modified wood in building materials, environment, and biological aspects respectively. Finally, the development trend of wood pore structure regulation is prospected to exploit the great potential of wood as a porous material and provide theoretical and technical support for the development of wood-based porous new materials.
